Climate Overview

Gilgit's
Climate

Gilgit city has a semi-arid continental climate. At 1,500m it's significantly warmer than Hunza (2,438m) or Skardu (2,228m), making it the most temperate of GB's major towns. Summers are hot — July and August regularly hit 35–38°C in the valley floor. Winters are mild by GB standards, rarely dropping below –5°C at town level.

Rainfall is extremely low: under 130mm per year. The city sits in a deep rain shadow. Most precipitation falls as snow above 2,500m in winter. Spring has occasional light rain. Summer is essentially dry.

The best time to visit is April to June and September to October. If you must visit in summer, early morning activities and evening walks are manageable — the middle of the day is genuinely hot.

Flight weather alert: Gilgit Airport (IATA: GIL) sits in a narrow valley. Flights from Islamabad are extremely weather-dependent — cancellation rates of 40–60% in cloudy months are not unusual. Always have a road backup plan.
