What to See

Snow on
the Sand

The reason Katpana stops people in their tracks is the contradiction of it. Sand dunes are something you expect in a hot lowland desert, yet here they sit at 2,226m with 7,000m+ glaciated peaks rising directly behind them. The sand was carried and deposited by the Indus River system over a very long span of time, and the high, dry valley climate keeps it loose and shifting.

In winter the dunes can be dusted or fully covered with snow, producing the surreal scenes the desert is famous for. In the warmer months the bare golden sand against the mountains is just as striking. Either way, the light at the start and end of the day is when the dunes show the most texture, so plan your visit around dawn or the hour before sunset.
