The Road
to Yasin

Key waypoints: Gilgit → Gahkuch (120km, 2h on paved KKH) → Gupis (70km more, 1.5h) → Yasin town (30km more, 45min). The road is paved throughout but narrows and roughens beyond Gupis. A standard sedan can reach Yasin town in dry weather — in wet weather a 4WD is safer.

Options

Option 1: Shared Transport (Budget)

Step 1NATCO bus from Gilgit General Bus Stand → Gupis. Daily departure approximately 7–8am. Fare Rs.400. Journey 4h. The bus follows the KKH south to Gahkuch then turns onto the Ghizer road.
Step 2From Gupis bazaar, take a shared Suzuki pickup or van to Yasin. These depart when full — usually 1–2 per day. Fare Rs.300–500. Journey 3h on a rougher road through the Ghizer gorge then into the Yasin valley.
Timing adviceArrive at Gupis bazaar by 9–10am to find a vehicle to Yasin. Vehicles are unreliable in the afternoon. If no vehicle, stay the night in Gupis (basic guesthouses Rs.600–1,000) and depart next morning.
Total costRs.700–900 for the complete journey Gilgit → Yasin town.

Option 2: Private Jeep from Gilgit

CostRs.12,000–18,000 return including driver and fuel. Negotiate beforehand — agree on return date and any side trips.
AdvantageTravel on your schedule, stop anywhere, go directly without transfers. Can reach upper Yasin valley beyond Yasin town.

Option 3: Via Chitral (Darkot Pass — Summer Trek Only)

RouteFrom Chitral, cross Darkot Pass (4,702m) into upper Yasin Valley. A 3-day trek, not a road route.
SeasonJune–September only. Pass is snowbound outside these months.
RequirementsExperienced trekker, local guide (Rs.2,000–3,000/day), full camping equipment, 3–4 days.
PracticalVery few travellers take this route. Historically used for trade and military movement. Outstanding scenery but logistically demanding.

Option 4: Fly to Gilgit then Road

FlightPIA or Air Sial: Islamabad → Gilgit (45min, Rs.5,000–12,000). Book the morning flight — afternoon flights cancel more often. Always build in one buffer day for weather cancellations.
ThenFrom Gilgit airport or city, follow Option 1 or 2 above to reach Yasin.
From Islamabad by road: It is also possible to drive from Islamabad via the KKH (480km to Gilgit, 14–16h) then continue to Yasin. Break the journey overnight at Besham or Chilas.

Gilgit → Gahkuch120km on KKH. Paved, generally good. Views of Ghizar River gorge.
Gahkuch → Gupis70km on the Ghizer road. Paved but narrower. Some sections close to cliff edge — take care on bends.
Gupis → Yasin town30km. Partly paved, partly rough. Passable by sedan in dry conditions. After rain, 4WD advisable.
Beyond Yasin townRoad becomes increasingly rough toward Immit and upper valley. 4WD or jeep required. Some sections may be impassable after heavy rain or early/late in season.
Winter closureThe Gupis–Yasin road can be blocked by snow November through March. Check conditions locally before attempting in shoulder months.
LandslidesThe road between Gahkuch and Gupis is prone to landslides in spring snowmelt (April–May). Allow extra time and check locally for recent blockages.
