Two Lakes

Choosing Between
Lower and Upper

Kachura is really two lakes with two very different moods. Lower Kachura, around 35km from Skardu, is the famous one — home to the Shangrila Resort with its red-roofed restaurant and manicured lake gardens. It is the postcard image most people have of Skardu, and on a calm morning the water mirrors the surrounding hills. It can get busy, so early is best.

Upper Kachura, a little further on at about 50km, is the opposite: no resort, no crowds, just a quiet lakeshore where camping is possible. If you want the polished, easy experience, go to Lower Kachura; if you want stillness and space, push on to the upper lake. Many visitors do both in a single half-day loop, starting early at Lower Kachura while the light is best.
