Gilgit city sits at 1,500m in a dry valley at the confluence of the Gilgit and Hunza rivers. Warmer than Hunza, drier than almost anywhere in the region. Here is what to expect month by month.
Gilgit city has a semi-arid continental climate. At 1,500m it's significantly warmer than Hunza (2,438m) or Skardu (2,228m), making it the most temperate of GB's major towns. Summers are hot — July and August regularly hit 35–38°C in the valley floor. Winters are mild by GB standards, rarely dropping below –5°C at town level.
Rainfall is extremely low: under 130mm per year. The city sits in a deep rain shadow. Most precipitation falls as snow above 2,500m in winter. Spring has occasional light rain. Summer is essentially dry.
The best time to visit is April to June and September to October. If you must visit in summer, early morning activities and evening walks are manageable — the middle of the day is genuinely hot.
| Best overall | April–May and September–October. These four months have comfortable temperatures, clear skies, and good access to all surrounding valleys. |
| Budget travel | November to March. Lowest prices, quietest, but cold. Only for independent travellers who don't mind limited guesthouse options. |
| Summer (Jul–Aug) | Use Gilgit as a pass-through hub. Stay 1 night max if transiting. The city is too hot to enjoy but Hunza (1,000m higher) and Skardu are comfortable. |
| Flight timing | Flights are most reliable in April–June and September–October when mountain weather is stable. July–August sees afternoon clouds forming. January–March has the most cancellations. |
| Naltar Ski Resort | February–March only. A rare exception: winter is the best time if skiing is the goal. Road to Naltar is usually open but snowpack-dependent. |
| Gilgit (1,500m) | Warmest of the major GB towns. July avg: 36°C. January avg: 5°C. Good as a logistics base year-round. |
| Hunza/Karimabad (2,438m) | 5–7°C cooler than Gilgit throughout the year. More comfortable in summer. Cherry blossom famous. |
| Skardu (2,228m) | Colder winters than both (-20°C possible). Drier and more desert-like. Hot summers but less extreme than Gilgit floor. |
| Fairy Meadows (3,300m) | Always cool, even in July. Nights near freezing even in summer. Snow from October onward. |
