Gilgit-Baltistan spans 3 climate zones and 4,000m of elevation. The "best time to visit" answer varies enormously depending on where you're going and what you want to do.
Most weather guides for Pakistan treat GB as a single place with a single season. It isn't. Gilgit at 1,500m has warm summers and mild winters. Deosai at 4,114m is snowbound from October to June. Hunza's apricot blossoms peak in late March. Skardu's Katpana Desert can be hot in July while Fairy Meadows is cold at night.
The general rule: April to October is the accessible season for most valleys. But within that window, the experience is radically different month by month — and the best months depend entirely on what you're there for.
Below are month-by-month conditions for GB as a whole (focused on Gilgit/Hunza), followed by destination-specific breakdowns.
Based on Gilgit town (1,500m). Add cold of approximately −1°C per 100m gain for higher elevations.
| Hunza Valley | March–April for blossom. September–October for autumn. July–August is peak but crowded. Avoid August if possible. |
| Gilgit city | April–October. March is pleasant. Hot July–August at 1,500m but bearable. Year-round accessible. |
| Skardu | April–October. Desert heat in July–August but the lakes and valleys stay cool. September is excellent. |
| Fairy Meadows | June–September. May has residual snow. October gets cold fast. July–August for wildflowers. |
| Deosai Plains | July–September only. Access road muddy before July. October sees early snow. Brown bears most active August. |
| K2 Base Camp | June–August for trekking. The Baltoro Glacier trek requires stable weather windows. July is optimal. |
| Naltar Valley | June–September for summer. October for larch autumn colours. January–February for skiing (Pakistan's only ski resort). |
| Naran Kaghan | June and September strongly over July–August. Babusar Pass: June 15–October 15 approximately. |
| Khunjerab Pass | May–October (open to traffic). July–August for clearest views. May and October for fewer tourists. |
Apricot and cherry blossom in Hunza. Warm days. Most roads open. Flights reliable. Moderate tourist numbers. Wildflowers starting at lower elevations. The standout month for Hunza specifically.
Post-monsoon clarity. Crowds gone. All passes still open. Harvest season brings colour and activity to villages. The best month for photography across the entire region.
