Naltar sits at the end of a rough jeep track branching off the KKH at Nomal — the last ~14km needs a 4×4. No public transport beyond the junction; here is every option in detail.
Naltar Valley branches off the Karakoram Highway at Nomal village, around 25–30km north of Gilgit. The KKH section to Nomal is fully paved and fast. From Nomal, a roughly 14km jeep track climbs into the valley — this is the only road in and out, and the rough part of the journey.
The jeep track to Naltar is rough in sections but well-used by local vehicles and the PAF. A standard 4WD jeep handles it without difficulty in good weather. The key constraint is snow: from October onwards, the upper sections accumulate snow that can close the road, and from November through April the track may be impassable without clearance. Always verify with Nomal locals before driving in winter.
| Shared Suzuki (Gilgit→Nomal) | Rs.100. Depart from Gilgit's main transport stand. 45 minutes. Drop off at Nomal bazaar junction. Frequent throughout the day. |
| Jeep hire at Nomal | Rs.3,000–5,000 one way. Negotiate for return trip or waiting time. Jeeps available in Nomal bazaar — ask any shopkeeper to direct you. |
| Private jeep from Gilgit | Rs.7,000–10,000 return, driver waits in Naltar. Best for day trips. Multiple jeep hire agents in Gilgit city, especially near the main bazaar and at guesthouses. |
| Direct Gilgit→Naltar shared | Rare. Occasionally a full vehicle goes directly from Gilgit to Naltar if enough passengers. Ask at Gilgit transport stand in the morning. |
| From Hunza/Karimabad | Drive or take transport south on KKH to Nomal junction (approximately 70km, 1.5h from Karimabad). No shortcut that avoids passing through Gilgit area. |
| From Islamabad by air | Fly to Gilgit (PIA ATR turboprop, ~50–60min, Rs.5,000–12,000; confirm current fares). Note: Gilgit flights cancel frequently due to weather. Allow a buffer day. Then proceed to Nomal by shared transport. |
| PAF Naltar airstrip | The valley has its own small airstrip used by the Pakistan Air Force. It is closed to civilian aircraft and cannot be used by tourists. |
| Taxi from Gilgit | Rs.5,000–8,000 one way in a standard taxi to Nomal, then jeep hire at Nomal. Cheaper but more effort than a direct jeep hire. |
| Nomal to Naltar village | ~14km, around 1–1.5h. Rocky in sections, narrow in parts. The road passes through forested valley and climbs steadily. Two or three river crossings on simple bridges. |
| May–September | Road fully passable. Occasional loose sections after rain. All jeeps and 4WDs fine. |
| October | Upper sections (above 2,500m) may have first snowfall by late October. Check conditions before leaving Nomal. |
| November–April | Road closure likely above 2,500m from November. Access to lower valley possible until December in good years. PAF maintains access for ski resort operations but does not clear the road for public use. |
| Winter (ski season) | PAF jeeps and snowmobiles operate in ski season. If the road is closed, the only access is on foot (several hours from the snowline) or by PAF-arranged transport. |
