What to See

A Lush Valley
and an Old Fort

Shigar is the green answer to Skardu's dry plains. About 45 kilometres and roughly two hours away, the valley floor is thick with apricot orchards that blossom in April and fruit in July, fed by the river that runs down from the high mountains beyond. Its centrepiece is Shigar Fort, a roughly 400-year-old royal fort that has been restored and now runs as the Serena heritage hotel — you can visit for the day even if you are not staying.

Beyond the fort, the valley is worth slow exploration. A natural stone arch, the Rock Bridge, sits some 10km past Shigar town, and the orchards and old village lanes reward a wander. Many people treat Shigar as a relaxed day trip from Skardu, allowing six to eight hours including a fort visit, while others overnight in village guesthouses to feel the valley settle into evening.
