Skardu is a destination most visitors underestimate, and the activities span a wide range of effort. Some, like climbing Kharpocho Fort for its 360-degree views or wandering the Katpana cold desert at dawn, are free and close to the city. Others — a boat trip on Lower Kachura Lake at Shangrila, or the K2 Museum in town — are easy add-ons that cost little.
The two activities that need a full day to themselves are Deosai National Park and Shigar Fort. Deosai is a 3 to 4 hour drive by 4WD onto a high plateau where brown bears, wildflowers, and glacial lakes wait at over 4,000m, and it is the standout day trip. Shigar Fort, about 45km out (roughly a 2-hour drive), rewards anyone interested in heritage and craftsmanship. Mix one big excursion with a couple of close, free stops and you have a full, varied few days.
Climbing Kharpocho Fort for its views and visiting the Katpana cold desert are both free.
Deosai National Park, a 3 to 4 hour drive by 4WD, with brown bears, wildflowers, and glacial lakes at over 4,000m.
