The last village before the high peaks — base for Masherbrum, Laila Peak and the Hushe side of the Gondogoro La.
Hushe is the roadhead village at the top of the Hushe valley in eastern Baltistan, and for trekkers and climbers it is one of the most important starting points in the Karakoram. From here the trails fan out toward Masherbrum, Laila Peak, the K6/K7 group, and the Hushe side of the Gondogoro La. Many of Baltistan's best high-altitude porters and mountain guides come from this valley.
What makes Hushe special is its range of options. You can do gentle day walks among terraced fields and summer pastures, longer base-camp treks beneath enormous peaks, or use it as the finish of a serious Concordia-to-Hushe traverse over the Gondogoro La.

In general terms, the valley is reached by driving from Skardu to Khaplu and then up a jeep track to Hushe village. From the village, the classic objectives are reached over a few days each: the route toward Masherbrum's base, the trail up beneath the striking spire of Laila Peak, and the approach to the foot of the Gondogoro La for those crossing to or from Concordia.
Shorter walks stay among the meadows, glacial streams and shepherd settlements close to the village — ideal for acclimatisation or a gentler trip. The higher base-camp treks move onto moraine and glacier margins beneath very large mountains, so they carry real alpine hazards.
Use any itinerary loosely and confirm current costs and arrangements with a local operator.
Best season: June to September, when the jeep track is open and the high routes are clear of deep snow. Summer is warm low in the valley but cold at altitude.
