Road Conditions

What to
Know First

The KKH is fully paved from Islamabad to Khunjerab but conditions vary dramatically by section. The Besham–Chilas stretch through the Indus Gorge is the most technically demanding — narrow in places, rockfall-prone, and completely unlit. Do not drive this section at night.

The Hunza section (Gilgit to Sost) is in excellent condition and is the scenic highlight of the entire highway. Road surfaces improve significantly north of Gilgit.

Islamabad → AbbottabadMotorway (M-1) then dual carriageway. Fast, easy. 2hrs.
Abbottabad → BeshamGood paved road, some narrow sections through hills. 3hrs.
