Getting There

Lahore
to the North

Lahore is closer to the mountains than Karachi but still has no direct air link into Gilgit-Baltistan. Most travellers fly Lahore to Islamabad — a short hop of under an hour — and then continue north either by air to Gilgit or Skardu, or overland up the Karakoram Highway. Islamabad remains the hub from which the GB journey actually begins.

From Lahore, the road trip is more feasible than from the far south: some travellers drive or take a coach to Islamabad and join a KKH journey north, turning the travel itself into part of the experience. The mountain flights from Islamabad are faster but weather-dependent and often cancelled, so a buffer day is wise. See our Lahore to Hunza and Lahore to Skardu guides for the full route breakdown.

Two real choices: fly to Islamabad then onward, or make the KKH a road trip. The road is reliable but long; the flight is quick but cancelled often. Prices swing with season and booking lead time, so always get a current quote.

Choosing an Operator

What to
Look For

From Lahore the decision often comes down to flying versus driving, and a good operator will lay out both honestly rather than steering you to whatever suits them. Look for transparent quoting — what is bundled, what is extra — and a willingness to build a buffer day around the unreliable mountain flights. If you prefer the road trip, the operator should be candid about how long the KKH leg really takes and where you will overnight.

Ask whether your guide stays with you for the whole GB portion, what vehicle you will travel in, and how the itinerary flexes if weather closes a route. Be wary of fixed prices quoted before anyone has asked about your dates or travel preference. Request a vetted quote through our agencies directory, or plan it yourself with the free explore planner.
