Gahkuch

Capital

Gahkuch is the best-serviced town in Ghizer — ATM, fuel, market, and the most accommodation options. Most travellers passing through stop here. Good base for day trips into lower Ghizer.

Hotel Green ValleyRs.2,000–3,000/room. Locally run. Decent rooms, hot water available evenings. Basic but comfortable.
Local guesthousesRs.1,000–1,800/room. Several options near the bazaar. Shared bathrooms. Very basic but perfectly functional for a night or two.
Gupis & Phander

Middle Valley
Options

Local hotelsRs.800–1,500. Basic rooms, shared facilities. Fine for one night. Ask at the bazaar — options change seasonally.

Phander

Phander Lake View HotelRs.2,500–4,000/room. Best location in Phander — partial lake views from upper rooms. Meals available. Book ahead in summer.
Lakeshore campingRs.300–500/night at a local camping ground on the eastern shore. Bring your own tent or hire locally. Basic toilet facilities.
Shandur Pass

High Plateau
Accommodation

There is no permanent accommodation at Shandur Pass. The plateau is uninhabited outside the festival season. Options depend entirely on whether you are visiting during the festival or not.

During festival (mid-July)A tent city is erected on the plateau. Tents: Rs.500–1,500/night depending on size and facilities. Book through festival organizers or PTDC. Fills completely.
Outside festival seasonCamping only. No facilities. Bring all supplies including food, water, and fuel. Temperature drops to near zero at night even in August.
Nearest baseTeru village (45 min below Shandur) has basic guesthouses Rs.1,000–1,500. Many festival visitors base here and drive up daily.
Festival booking: Book accommodation for festival dates (mid-July) at least 6–8 weeks in advance. Phander, Teru, and even Gupis guesthouses fill up. The festival is the biggest annual event in GB — do not assume you can find a bed on arrival.
Food

What to Eat
in Ghizer

Food throughout Ghizer is basic but filling. The standard menu across all guesthouses and dhabas: dal, chapati, fried egg, sometimes rice. Chicken is available in Gahkuch and Phander. Fresh vegetables in summer from local gardens — potatoes, onions, tomatoes.

No restaurants in the upscale sense. Phander has a lake-view dhaba near the western shore serving chai and basic meals. In Gahkuch, a few dhabas serve a slightly wider menu including karahi in the evenings.

Self-catering: If camping at Shandur or doing a multi-day drive through the valley, carry dry rations from Gilgit: instant noodles, bread, biscuits, dried fruit, nuts. Markets thin out rapidly above Gahkuch.
Chai and breakfastRs.150–300 per person at any dhaba
Dal and chapati lunch/dinnerRs.300–500 per person
Guesthouse meals (included)Usually available at PTDC and most hotels for Rs.400–600/meal
