Climate Overview

Two Climates
One Valley

Ghizer has a semi-arid valley climate in its lower sections. Gahkuch at around 1,800m sees warm dry summers (28–32°C) and cold winters but less snow than the upper Karakoram. As you move up the valley toward Phander (~2,800m) and Shandur Pass (3,734m), the climate becomes progressively sub-alpine.

Shandur Pass has a short summer (July–September) and is snow-covered for the rest of the year. Temperature can drop to 5°C even on July nights at Shandur. The valley below Phander is accessible year-round; Phander and above closes in winter.

Altitude difference: Pack layers even in summer. Gahkuch may be 28°C while Shandur is 12°C on the same day. The temperature gap can surprise unprepared visitors.
